London Quidditch Club (LQC) was founded in summer 2018 by various athletes and graduates who had relocated to London and wanted to play with their friends in a competitive but friendly environment.Since then, the club has gone from strength to strength, consistently medaling at the highest levels of UK Quidditch, most notably winning the 2019 British Quidditch Cup in our inaugural season.
We train weekly in Clapham, with our club consisting of both an A and B team, who compete across regional, national and international events alike - including the European Quidditch Cup.

London Quidditch Club

Our 2nd edition of the European Qualifier Tournament, a fairly new mainstream tournament hosted by QuidditchUK, unravelled last weekend at  the Salford Sports Village during the 1st and 2nd of February. 

London  Quidditch Club A faced their Clapham Common neighbours London  Unspeakables, yet again for the 3rd time this season within the grand  final of the event.  Since they encountered the Unspeakables twice this  season, once during the Southern Cup 2019 semi-final and the other  during the ‘final’ play-in game last weekend at one side of the bracket.  We can imagine LQCA were a bit frustrated with playing the same team  they previously lost to a third time round. Luckily for them, they did  not honour the Unspeakables a winning three-peat. In a final which  anyone could tell LQC were hungry for the win, the tables had turned  with the score set at 40-10 before snitch on pitch,  Unspeakables still  within overtime range to create even more upsets. During their previous  game against LQCA, Unspeakables caught from 20 points down to win their  game, entering the final. LQCA had to take a slight diversion, facing  the Megalodons in an intense game with VQC’s second team cold-caught the  snitch from 60 points down (90-30), ending the game at 90-60*. 

During  the final, Chema Hidalgo Lopez caught from behind snitch Steve Busson  to finish the game off at a cool 70*-10 to London Quidditch Club A. Thus securing their first tournament overall victory this season. A massive  congratulations to the newest community club from London, who are now  well into their second season since their genesis. 

Yes, and that’s about it! But for those who thought EQT was as wrapped  up as that, guess again. (See a list of full rankings at the end of this  article)

To kick off the new decade, #EQT2020 facilitated twelve  of the best teams from across the country based off the rankings that  stand from the Northern and Southern events  that took place in November  2019. Both winners of each respected regional tournament, the  Velociraptors  and the Werewolves of London Firsts, automatically  qualified for EQC Division 1 as well as landing a ‘first seed’ within  their eventual groups for the international tournament. EQT’s purpose  was to house these twelve teams to compete to gain not only  qualification for Division 1 (Ghent, Belgium) and Division 2 (Brescia,  Italy) of the European Quidditch Cup with three spots available for the  former and a generous five up for grabs for the latter. But also to  calculate which teams had the best seeding within the upcoming  tournaments based in Europe. 

The European Qualifier’s policy  stayed true to the Northern and Southern rankings, with selected the  best six teams from each region. Leceister Thestrals ranked 5th at  Northern Cup 2019, securing a spot at EQT 2020 and were originally  attending their first European Qualifier Tournament.  Leicester decided  to withdraw from the event due to financial difficulties, following a  vote ordered by the club’s committee. A new team was able to take  Leicester’s spot, and QuidditchUK offered the position to Sheffield, who  later declined the opportunity. It was then offered to Warwick  Quidditch Club, who solidified as the 12th and final team competing at  the tournament in Salford, Manchester. 

To recap, London Quidditch Club A (1st) will be going to EQC D1 with a 2nd Seed place within the eventual groups, whereas second-time silver medallists, London Unspeakables (2nd) as well as bronze medallists, the Megalodons (3rd) will be running into EQC D1 as a 3rd seeded team. Olympians Quidditch Club (4th) and Oxford Mammoths  (5th)  have been granted as EQC D2’s 1st Seeded teams in Italy, taking place  in March of this year. Finally, London Quidditch Club’s second team, LQCB (6th) joins the former teams in Italy as the only 2nd Seeded team to come out of the tournament, leaving Southampton Quidditch Club (7th) and Edinburgh Holyrood Hippogriffs (8th) as unseeded teams respectively. 

Congratulations  to each and everyone of the teams that came and competed in Manchester,  whether you qualified for a European Quidditch Cup division or didn’t,  QuidditchUK would like to extend our praise to you for how well teams  performed on the weekend. On the contrary, from a volunteering and  resourcefulness perspective, absolutely everyone lent their assistance  to make this EQT the best one yet and we couldn’t have done it without  your continuous support! Victory at Last! LQC A Claims Gold At EQT 2020

Last weekend saw the sixth edition of the Southern Cup, hosted at  Brookes Sport in Harcourt Hill, Oxford Brookes University between the  9th and 10th of November. 

16 teams competed at this year’s  Southern regional tournament, with nearly half of those teams being made  up of London community teams (7/16 to be precise). Group A-D featured  at least one London team  (Group C featuring three!) so it’s not  surprising when we saw an all London podium at the end of Sunday’s  games. 

In an intense final, the Werewolves of London Firsts  reclaimed their gold medals kicking off the season in style against the  London Unspeakables which ended in overtime, compiling a final score of  160°-120*. The match between London’s oldest club and EQC 2019’s bronze  medalists was regarded as “one of the most exciting finals in UK  Quidditch in years”. Some even comparing it to the likes of the BQC 2015  final in Nottingham against Southampton Quidditch Club and the  Radcliffe Chimeras which ended in overtime as well. 

The Unspeakables had beaten previous national champions London Quidditch  Club A in a tight semi-final beforehand, who then progressed to the  third-place playoff, facing the Oxford Mammoths to eventually claim a  3rd place finish for LQCA. 

For winning Southern this year, the  Werewolves have been given a pass in competing at the European Qualifier  Tournament as regional winners are awarded a top seed spot at Division 1  of the European Quidditch Cup hosted in Belgium in May 2020. Other  teams to qualify for EQT aside from the podium finishers include Oxford  Mammoths (4th), Southampton Quidditch Club (5th), Southsea Quidditch (6th) and London Quidditch Club B (7th).

QuidditchUK  would like to ultimately thank its large influx of volunteers for this  year’s Southern Cup, from non-qualified tournament roles alike to  tournament committee posts running gameplay, media, event and management  duties. Special thanks go to Alex Greenhalgh, the Tournament Director,  who ran a smooth and exciting tournament that gave our athletes more  games for their money despite poor weather conditions on Day 1. 

Congratulations  go to the Werewolves of London Firsts for retaining their title of  southern champions for two seasons in a row. We’d like to extend our  praise to all our players and teams who competed this year making this  Southern Cup one to remember. More importantly, a massive consideration  goes out to all volunteers who ran a fantastic tournament giving their  time, resources and talent across the event.

Werewolves of London Firsts Win Southern Cup 2019

This weekend saw the sixth iteration of the British Quidditch Cup, hosted in Newcastle at the Northumbria Sport University.

Almost 600 athletes across 31 teams from all over the United Kingdom came together, to crown a new national champion.

London Quidditch Club, in their inaugural season, took home the British Quidditch Cup after defeating two-time national champions, Velociraptors Quidditch Club, in a tight semi-final – before defeating the Werewolves of London in a grand finale that had both sides throwing everything they had at each other.

Velociraptors Quidditch Club went on to take the bronze medal against Southampton Quidditch Club, who have continued to prove they are still one of the best teams in the country; university or otherwise.

Warwick Quidditch Club defeated the Leicester Thestrals in a tight Lower-Bracket final, while Winchester Quidditch Club made a surprise run into the Top-16 after winning Development Cup and a spot at the British Quidditch Cup.

We’d like to thank the many volunteers we’ve had who made this season possible. 2018/2019 was easily the largest undertaking QuidditchUK have faced, and none of it would have been possible without the selfless help of our volunteers and officials who gave their time, talent, and resources towards making this year what it was.

A huge congratulations to London Quidditch Club on winning the national championship, and a further congratulations to all of our teams and athletes that competed this year. As the sport continues to grow and evolve, we’re growing increasingly excited as to what the competition will look like next year across both the university and community landscapes.
